It's time to start doing more interesting things with Ick. So I picked up a bunch of "Barbie" items for him to play with, including a number of hats. Turns out, they are the perfect size for parrot head wear. Holding his head very still so they don't fall off, you can see Ick loves the attention, ooo's and ahhhhs that the hats give. 30 Nov 2011 at 11:48PM Ruffling
Usually, you never pair larger birds with small, but they all need a flock of sorts. Because Ick is young, and I don't have young birds near the same size, I thought adding a small but mature bird as her cage mate just might work. At first, Goldie fluffed up her feathers to make herself look much larger, while Ick took on the "chick" pose (ruffled neck feathers), and begged with infantile chirps. Wallah! Goldie was smitten! 1 Dec 2011 at 12:13AM Meet Lucy
Lucy is an Indian Ringneck. She has a vocabulary of about 20 words, and a few whistles and unusual coos. 1 Dec 2011 at 12:23AM Attack Bird
When Lucy gets under my desk, she becomes a vicious attack bird and is apt to take several chunks of meat off your toes if you aren't quick enough! Looks at those eyes...she means business! 14 Dec 2011 at 8:25PM Defending the Dish
Lucy is a sweetheart...most of the time. You have to watch her eyes to make sure she isn't in one of her moods. Such is the case here. 14 Dec 2011 at 8:29PM New Toy!
New toys never last long. You want your birds to be able to chew them up, but some chew up faster than others. Soft wood, colored corn husks and jute are perfect for this sort of thing. In the background is my favorite bird toy, the "yell" ball. Every time it is bumped, it yells a recorded phrase (that hopefully Ick learns and repeats), like "Oh, You got me!" or "Woof woof woof". 14 Dec 2011 at 8:37PM Ahoy Sailor!
When putting the sailor hat on Ick, I always say "Ahoy Sailor!". With time and lots of finger crossing, Ick will hopefully get the idea to say it when he sees that hat. Already he is verbalizing sounds he hears, though not very well yet. 14 Dec 2011 at 8:42PM Pretty Bird!
Goldie enjoys her turn with the hats...meanwhile, Lucy jumped down to hide under the desk and I had to go get "protection" slippers. 14 Dec 2011 at 8:49PM Take off
Ick flies to me on command now...and often without any command lol. All it takes is a glace his way and amid cries of glee and fluffed feathers, it's swooosh....wings, beak, and claws, there's no stopping him! 14 Dec 2011 at 8:56PM Dancing with the "Yell" ball.
Whom ever invented this toy should be given an award! It's Ick's favorite too! 14 Dec 2011 at 9:03PM Playing at the bottom of the cage
African Grays are notorious for grousing around the bottom of their cages. Ick is no different. Here, he has found and is quickly dismantling a perch that fell. -- 20 Dec 2011 at 2:49AM Brilliant Green
Goldie has been molting, and the green seems extra brilliant this time around. Her feathers remind me of spring, and seem to always start greener. They slightly fade with time, until they are finally shed, and new feathers appear once again. 20 Dec 2011 at 2:53AM Getting ready to take off
As you can see from prior photos, there's no point in combing my hair until Ick has finished his morning flight around the house. 20 Dec 2011 at 9:33PM Ruffling
Ick ruffles for two reasons these days. One, when he is feeling defensive, when he sees someone he doesn't know or like for example. Two, when he is begging like a baby, for food for example. You can usually tell the difference if you can get a good look at his eyes, however, if it's you he is being afraid of, I wouldn't recommend getting that close 5 Jan 2012 at 4:22AM Banjo in rapt attention
For good reason too. Mariah has gotten down on the floor. It wouldn't be the first time he had to scoot quick, to either grab a dropped morsel or scurry from an impending bite. 5 Jan 2012 at 4:24AM ...and here comes Mariah, stalking Banjo
See what I mean? Mariah is a big bird and weighs well over five pounds. Picture what a five pound chicken looks like in the grocery store and you will have a good idea of Mariahs body size, sans beak, and wings. 6 Jan 2012 at 11:26PM Try doing this forty times around the room!
Mariah's greatest thrill in life is playing "Eagle." 5 Jan 2012 at 4:27AM Look at that smile!
Those bright red feathers, you see ruffling as she swings, are the softest feathers I have ever had the pleasure to run my fingers through. Far softer than rabbit fur! 5 Jan 2012 at 4:49AM Ick & Davi Playing Together
These two big boyds now chatter all day together. While Davi only says "wooohooooo" along with several whistles he's picked up from Ick, Icarus has a complete vocabulary menagerie. Ick is a very vocal bird and will often rattle through all the words he knows, sometimes singing them, sometimes just speaking them as if he were conversing to himself. Among the things he now says are:
15 Aug 2013 at 4:58PM Ick and Davi, all grown up
Ick is now two years old, and Davi one year. It's like children, you wonder where the time went! 13 Aug 2013 at 8:06PM A Day In The Life Of A Boyd
Listening, mimicking, playing, eating, sleeping, preening and watching. These are busy boyds! 13 Aug 2013 at 8:08PM |
