Do You See Ugly Or Beauty?
OK, so I am mom - Davi is an adorable little chick in my eyes. There is something about babies that touch all our hearts regardless of their origin (well, maybe not snakes), but truth is, parrot chicks must be the homeliest, most awkward and odd looking of all God's baby creatures...with the exception of robin chicks and moles (poor little things!!): This picture is included in the If you love life, life will love you back - Davinci photo album belonging to Badger. Re: agony of deFeet - Rather than being tropical or not, a chicks nakedness when hatched is tied into two important aspects of the bird's environment: food availability and predation pressure. All altricial birds (all parrots, regardless of origin are altricial) are born blind and helpless and naked but with a high metabolic rate and grow rapidly. Precocial birds (like chickens for example) are hatched feathered and can walk and feed on their own but have a lower metabolic rate and grow relatively slowly. While the altricial young are in the nest, the entire brood is extremely vulnerable to predation and is dependent on concealment of the nest and parental defense for survival. In contrast, precocial young, having left the nest, have some ability to avoid predation, and there is a much smaller chance of the entire brood (as opposed to single chicks) being devoured. I hope this helps answer your question. Posted at 23 Jul 2012 at 11:02PM by Badger (You must be logged in to post comments) |
