Clouds build up against the mountain ridges cooling the California side while the heat in the desert holds them back on the Nevada side, until in one big swoosh, the cooler clouds full of evaporated water from the lake flow over the mountain peaks hitting the heat, and thats the beginning of the rain, thunder and lightning on both sides. Honestly, it's not that bad this year as compared to any other year.
