Is it black? I never seen a black squirrel.. ours here are gray or reddish brown

Michigan has a gray that looks black..... only in the Mid part of the state.

I've always wanted to see a black squirrel. They are in my area, but I've just never been at the right place at the right time. This one looks very busy.

Why is it odd? It a color phase of the grey squirrel, they also come in white, though those are more common in the South. Lots of animals have mutations which cause different color phases than the common colors.

I asked my husband about this, he lived in MI his whole life until 4 years ago. He says yes, these are very common out there!

Jeff must be right and it's really a "black" looking gray squirrel, since he lived there...but they did look black to me lol.

It IS black. Its a color phase, not an optical illusion. Grey squirrels also come in white too, another color phase.
