Ick ruffles for two reasons these days. One, when he is feeling defensive, when he sees someone he doesn't know or like for example. Two, when he is begging like a baby, for food for example. You can usually tell the difference if you can get a good look at his eyes, however, if it's you he is being afraid of, I wouldn't recommend getting that close
