Hi everyone, It's that time again! If you are the first player to answer this riddle, Badger has a GT keychain pen for you! So what are you waiting for? Hurry on over to the poetry board! See you there! Tessa She is my favorite president, And she hangs with Kangaroos. And when I play a game with her, I cheat, but I still lose! Her nic seems to indicate, She has a lot to say. She is always ahead of me, Cause her night is my day! She's given me my own DB, Where I can post my stuff. Now it's time for you to guess, Cause I have said enough! Please post your answers on the DB.
Welcome back to the second Reversi article. Last time I mentioned 5 tips for helping you in the opening of an Othello game. I am confident that you have memorized them by now, but just to be sure (and for all the confused players who still think chess is the nicest game here they are once more: 1. Try to have fewer discs than your opponent. 2. Try to occupy the center of the position (the 4 center-squares in the first few moves). 3. Avoid flipping too many frontier discs (those located on the outside boundaries of the position, i.e. avoid building walls). 4. Try to group your discs into one connected cluster rather than having several scattered isolated discs. 5. Avoid taking edges too soon (before the mid-game). You may also remember the concept of mobility: if one player has more possible moves than his opponent, he usually is ahead in the game. So if you want to win, you want to make moves that increase your mobility or make moves that sustain your possible moves while the opponent gets fewer choices. So how does this tie in to the three opening tips we didn't discuss last time (i.e. 2,3 and 5)? Let's start with number 2. The point mentions something about frontiers. Like the tip says: a frontier is a set of disks of one color that are connected on the outside of a position. Look at #2232476 move #18 to see an example of a white frontier from b3 to f5. In this case, white can not move to the south or to the east side of the board. Maybe obvious but worth mentioning: if you have a large frontier, then you do not have many options. For the opponent, the objective is to not break the frontier, because then suddenly you have options once more. If you followed the reasoning above, then take a few seconds to look at the same position one move before #2232476 move #17 and ask yourself the question: why does white choose to prolong his frontier by playing b3? If you think you know, please read on. However, if you haven't a clear answer, have a look at both positions and then return here. I am looking over your shoulder right now, so no cheating ;-) If you look at the resulting position, the main question is: where can black play? B7 isn't an option really, because white can grab a corner and early corners are almost certainly a win for the owner, so black will want to play somewhere else. However, if black plays a5 or a6, then he has created a large frontier also, where white has a relative easy option of playing b5. B5 in this case only provides one new option (a6) on the edge, and in this case black has both a6 and a3, whereas our tip 5 mentions that this isn't too shabby. So the best option black has is to reduce white's frontier, where g6, c2 and d2 are all acceptable options. Frontiers have 2 disadvantages. First of all, you block your own moves. The other disadvantage is a bit less tangible, but counts nonetheless: if you have a long frontier, any new move usually flips more than one disk of the opponent because there is an increased chance of having diagonal flips next to the horizontal/vertical lines. This eventually reduces your options as well. This is the point of tip 2: if you stay centered, you'll have nicer options eventually. It also is one of the major points of tip 5: if you have many edges in the beginning, you will find that later moves will flip more disks because you will, almost all the time, will flip disks that are in line with one of your edges. So far for this time, next time we'll head to the other side of the game: the end and a new concept called parity. In the mean time: go flip some disks! Cheers, Smaughster If you think you´ve got what it takes to impart some unknown game skills to other players out there, send your submissions for Games Corner to Kran Jesters ~n~ Jokers by Red Arrow To all you GoldToken Jokers! It's come time where we need your best jokes messaged to Red Arrow for our newsletter! All jokes must be suitable for all ages and never before posted on our Joke discussion board in GoldToken. Send your address to Badger and she will promptly send your prize! A couple was dressed and ready to go out for the evening. They turned on a night light, turned the answering machine on the phone line, covered their pet parakeet and put the cat in the backyard. They phoned the local cab company and requested a taxi. The taxi arrived and the couple opened the front door to leave their house. The cat they had put out into the yard scoots back into the house. They don't want the cat shut in the house because she always tries to eat the bird. The wife goes out to the taxi while the husband goes inside to get the cat. The cat runs upstairs, the man in hot pursuit. Waiting in the cab, the wife doesn't want the driver to know the house will be empty for the night. She explains to the taxi driver that her husband will be out soon. 'He's just going upstairs to say good-bye to my mother." A few minutes later, the husband gets into the cab. "Sorry I took so long, "he says, as they drive away.”Stupid witch was hiding under the bed. Had to poke her with a coat hanger to get her to come out! She tried to take off so I grabbed her by the neck. Then I had to wrap her in a blanket to keep her from scratching me. But it worked. I hauled her fat rear downstairs and threw her out into the back yard!" The cabdriver hit a parked car.... To get things started, for the entire month of September the 6x5 tournament will be open to Goldtoken guests. Guests who decide to play will compete for their own prize listed below. To join in the tournament please read the complete rules that can be found on the 6x5 player profile. Then to join the fun go to { Board: 6x5 Trivia Addicts } board, read the questions, and just PM me 6x5 your answers. No signups, no call ahead seating or reservations needed. Once you have PM´d me your first set of answers to the questions posted, you´re in! Keep in mind that the 6x5 board is very competitive and you will need as many points as possible so get in on the first round to maximize your chances to win. Because of September´s special prize you can expect a BIG difference in the tournament play. The questions are going to be harder, the pictures on the MSN site a lot harder to identify and you guessed it, the logic puzzle. You can bet it is going to be there and not just any puzzle. I have come up with a monster 5 part puzzle that will be integrated in to the 6x5 tournament that will challenge even the most experienced logic players. You will need to keep your own notes because the answers to the logic puzzles in the first four rounds will be needed to complete the 5th and final puzzle in the last round. The answers to previous rounds will be removed from the boards soon after posting and that is just for the first tournament of the month! For those of you who are groaning in agony at the the phrase "logic puzzle", I have included a few tips that may help in solving the puzzle. Rules for the September 6x5 TournamentThis tournament the scoring and rules will be the same as all the normal tournaments but with a lot more points to be had. Please see the 6x5 player profile for the complete set of rules. Big Prizes at Stake for the month of SeptemberFor Goldtoken members the prizes are as follows: 1st place: Goldtoken Duffle Bag 2nd place: Goldtoken T-shirt 3rd place: Goldtoken Squiggle Pen 4th place: Goldtoken Color Shirt Pen For the Goldtoken guests who decide to give the 6x5 Tournament a try, they will be competing for one single prize. To the highest scoring Goldtoken guest member in the month of September will go a one month Gold membership Logic Puzzle TipsA logic puzzle is a test of a person´s ability to think clearly. Usually you are asked to match up sets of things. For example, you might be told that four men own an exotic pet, to solve the puzzle you´d match up each man´s first name with his last name and his kind of pet. You figure out how to match them up by studying a list of clues like "The llama does not belong to Duane." Below are some hints that may help you to solve the 6x5 logic puzzles. Good Luck! 1. Read a puzzle´s introduction carefully, and make sure you understand what you are trying to figure out. If each person has two pets for example, and you assume each person has only one, you might find yourself banging your head against the wall and twitching like a cockroach on it´s last leg all the while sending evil curses to 6x5 for no reason. We wouldn´t want that, now would we? 2. Information you´ll need to solve these puzzles is often contained in the introduction. For instance, the introduction to a seating chart puzzle at a dinner party might tell you that no husband was seated next to his own wife. If you know that, and know which couples are married, you can eliminate certain seating arrangements right off the bat. Or, a puzzle might talk about dates to certain events in history like WWII, that lasted from 1939 to 1945. Don´t miss these important clues! 3. Stuck? Then go over the clues again, one at a time. Have you really used every bit of the information that can be squeezed out of each clue given? 4. Another way to get unstuck- though it is more work- is to make an assumption. Or as I like to call it, "a logical guess". It may be neccessary to make a "logical guess" based on facts you´ve established. When you do, always look for facts or clues to disprove it. If you find that your guess is incorrect, eliminate it as a possibility. Let´s assume...say Badger is Mr. Purple and see where that leads. (make up a different solution on a separate piece of paper for this. Then if your assumption turns out to be wrong, you can go back to your original paper.) If you end up with a contradiction in your answer, fact, or clue that disproves Badger is Mr. Purple, you then know that Badger isn´t Mr. Purple after all. And if you end up with an answer with no contradictions, you just solved the puzzle! Sometimes the only way to solve a tough puzzle is by making and disproving assumptions. But remember, you only have 48 hours to get it right. 5. But experienced 6x5 puzzle solvers know that the most effective way to get unstuck is to put the puzzle aside for awhile. Go on to research and find the answers to other 6x5 questions, do a load of laundry, or cut some grass, come back to it in an hour or so. When you come back to the puzzle with a clear mind, you´ll probably see things you didn´t notice the first time. 6. Need a hint? Sorry, I can´t give you one, but nice try. At the beginning of the next round you will see the correct answer. If you are really, really, really stumped after the answer is posted and want to see the explanation to the answer given, I could type it up and send it to you. I normally do not type this up because the explanations are very lengthy and time consuming, but hey...anything for the fans, right? 7. If you think you have found a solution, carefully check it out again. Check it against each clue in the puzzle. Usually you will find that you have overlooked a subtle contradiction. These have been designed for their to only be one correct answer, but if your solution still holds up, please let me know!

I have wondered for years what happened and if everything was ok!!! Just to make sure we are talking about the same fellow...he was a school coach. Used to tease him about coaching T-Ball. Had thought he was already married, but suppose I could be wrong (wouldn't be a first lol). Re: Discovering GoldToken Posted by Bruno on 22 Jul at 4:49PM Don't remember. I came and checked it out and have been here ever since. GT rocks ! Re: Discovering GoldToken Posted by Merlin the Wizard on 24 Jul at 12:05AM And SunnyD suggested it to me!! Gefore that, she and I were playing at IYT. It's kinda funny how most people do it this way, I can not find anyone who suggested trying another gamesite instead of Goldtoken. Quite a lot have two or more sites, me included, buy Goldtoken is now the firm favourite. Re: Discovering GoldToken Posted by Lindap957 on 22 Jul at 10:51PM I discovered GT back in 2002 when my sister Just4fun told me about it. I believe that she learned it from eddie spaghetti. (hope I spelled that right). She found it fun to play on here and I have found that I feel the same way. Re: Discovering GoldToken Posted by Hillbilly Paul on 22 Jul at 11:02PM I discovering GoldToken while panning for Gold in the Spokane river!! Really I found GoldToken by search engine! I was tired of another site that I started out on and just knew there had to be one better! Re: Discovering GoldToken Posted by superkaempe the gentle giant on 22 Jul at 11:31PM I had been playing 1KittieKat for some time at iyt when she told me about this site in January 2001 and I have been here since. Re: Discovering GoldToken Posted by SarahMills on 22 Jul at 11:47PM my son klaashaas told me about it Re: Discovering GoldToken Posted by BENSTER on 23 Jul at 12:37AM Touche lured me away from IYT, and man, am I glad he did! :^) Re: Discovering GoldToken Posted by **FREESPIRIT RoSe PAB 101ST * on 23 Jul at 7:41AM was in a chat room and my g/f dragged me here and its been 5 awesome yrs i even have the logo on my page lol gt rocks. Re: Discovering GoldToken Posted by Hamlet on 23 Jul at 8:05AM Someone at IYT told me about this site. I thought the last thing I needed at that moment was another gamesite so I decided to just give it a quick look without revealing myself. 'James Bond' seemed a suitable nickname to carry out such a mission. 4 years on and at least I've managed to change the nick. Re: Discovering GoldToken Posted by Kat on 23 Jul at 8:22AM I was new to the internet and was at IYT and gaterman who has left GT now. brought me over here when I asked for a better gamesite than IYT and been here since Re: Discovering GoldToken Posted by asmdrm on 23 Jul at 8:31AM I came from IYT a player from here told me about it and it's been years and many fun games later, love this site! Re: Discovering GoldToken Posted by Aphrodite on 23 Jul at 11:16AM I still play there with a lady that I have been playing with for a few years. I am only a guest there now. We have been through a lot together. The death of her husband and the problems with my grandson. I will stay there as a guest untill my friend stops playing. But this is the best site. :o) Re: Discovering GoldToken Posted by Jump This on 24 Jul at 4:44PM A young lady who I played on a regular basis at IYT suggested I check it out---when I first checked out the "who's online page" there were a whopping 28 people online--lol--we were both amused but soon found out how well this site was run. Questions, comments and complaints were usually handled in a promt, courteous and friendly manner, unlike anything I had experienced at other game sites. Also,I always liked the fact that this site does not tolerate any juvenile, locker room trash talk on its DB's! At GT one gets the feelng that he/she is part of a warm, small town, freindly community that is concerned with family values and with satisfying the needs of all its members. It's a great way to pass some time and it's well worth the membership fee.Where else can you have this much fun for what amounts to a few pennies a day?----I hope this site stays around for many years to come and adds many new members as I'm sure it will. Would you like to make your affection for GoldToken known? Please send your testamonials (or any other material submissions) to Red Arrow for possible inclusion in future editions -- thank you!
