Hello everyone and welcome to our 19th edition of the Goldtoken Monthly Newsletter!!! Thanks to everyone who has helped make the newsletter such a great success, and be sure to read through and check out the ways you too can contribute. Like to see your name 'in lights'? { Club } is a success!  For anyone that doesn't know what { Club } is, it is a club for new players to try out our wonderful game site for free. Guest players who have never had a membership before, receive a 60 day free trial silver membership to try out our club with, plus the different games and variations. We even have challenges for the regular members to play! All new members are eligible to win a GoldToken pen for being the best guest player in the challenge. The challenges are for all members of the club. This is a good way to meet some of our new players. You can even announce your Club and let the Guests have a chance to check out your club. In the last round of new guest players invited to our club, we've had 44 players join so far! There are lots of things to do in our club. We have a Hangman game, a Fill It In (like grabble but just for fun) and Tic Tac Toe. We also have a Newbie Quiz for the Guests to answer questions and learn how to find different things on our site. The first one to get the questions right wins a prize. There is also a continuing story that the players are writing called, Once Upon A Time In GoldToken Land. If you are already a member or a new guest and would like to see what we are doing, everyone is invited to come take a look. There is always so much fun to be had. We look forward to seeing you there! A few thoughts on Hypergammon For those who do not know, Hypergammon is a variant of Backgammon in which each player starts off with only 3 pieces (placed in a row at the beginning of each side of the board). The rules and goal of the Hypergammon are the same as its many piece big-brother with the exception that Gammons and backgammons only count one point until either player offers a double. The game is quick-going and the strategies differ from backgammon. With only 3-pieces each it seems that the game should be rather simple (and according to a search on google an optimal strategy for the game can be analytically computed), but nonetheless the game is both entertaining and challenging for those of us who are suboptimal. The fun of the game is that reversals of the upperhand can be quick and are almost always within reach (double 6’s can make a lot of headway). In regard to strategies here are a few rules of thumb that have seemed to work well for me: It is an advantage to have pieces doubled up as far forward on the board as can be managed. It is only in this way that you can be sure not to lose territory when you opponent gets a lucky roll. Doubling-up pieces in the first quarter of the board serves next to no purpose. If your opponent can get a piece this far up the board it is in your interest to have your pieces on separate spaces so that you can maximize your chances of landing on their piece. Also if you are captured then you do not lose many pips, but you gain an extra chance to land on your opponents piece. While if you are ahead in pips you generally want to have your pieces doubled up, if you are behind in pips you generally want to have your pieces in different spaces (this maximizes your chances of landing on your opponent). If you are far behind, you want to use your pieces as a mine-field (if your opponent lands on your piece then you will be in a better position return the favor to land on their advanced pieces). Accordingly, if you are ahead it is much better to pass your opponents pieces unharmed rather than landing on them... Use the doubling cube when you think you have good position! Given that gammons and backgammons only count after a double then you want to press your advantages! But BE CAREFUL, if your opponent gets a double 6 things can turn-around quickly! If your opponent doubles, you should carefully evaluate their position. If they are doubled in their inner points then they are pretty well protected, but otherwise remember that they will have to become vulnerable in order to advance... capturing a single forward piece can often turn the game around. Play the 9-point variant! With only three pieces a lucky role can easily determine the game, but this will even out across the match. Also the doubling cube adds an extra level of fun to the game. I won't mention that website, but I know I won't be renewing my membership at that site due to what those people have done to it. I've mentioned it to their management and their answer is "put them on mute" and does nothing about it. I wanted to let you know what Gold Token has done. I know that Gold Token doesn't tolerate the profanity, name calling, and petty fighting that other sites will. That's why I'm here. There are clubs to join, discussion boards to have fun on, and along with Presidents making tournaments, and helping Presidents will small lists to put as a poll (Letter Lingo). It makes me feel important to know I have a small part on the work to making Gold Token run. I know that many get along, and there are others that try to avoid other people because of what they have done. I've done my "wrongs" in the past and paid for them, and apologized along the way. It's up to the other person to either accept or reject apologizies but I give them anyway. I think Gold Token will go a long way in the future. They have great tournaments (which I haven't won one of yet), but I enjoy the games and the chat that I have between other players and myself. Your Management team is good at making sure none of these players get into this "family style" site. I just wanted to let you know I'm happy to be part of the Gold Token family for years to come with all your games, trivia contests, letter lingos, etc. and of course, giving credit to Ray and Firefly for making our chat fun with the "goldies"! I've lost one site that I go to because it was contaminated by a certain group of people, but I know that wouldn't happen here at Gold Token because of your management team.
