October 2014
October 5, 2014, unofficially marked 15 years for GoldToken. (Unofficial because the site did not officially lunch until January but players were able to start signing up in October). What was started by Chad as a place for family and friends to get together and play games has exploded into the wonderful site it is today. GoldToken started out with just Chess and now has over 200 different games and variants to choose from. In honor of this milestone anniversary we had so much happening on the 5th. Profile tokens were won, tournaments with great prizes were started and everyone had a great time. If you missed all the fun yesterday you can still have a look around the site and see what was happening. There were people telling why they care about GoldToken on the db, sharing memories of time playing here at GoldToken on the db, and going back in time to when they were 15 on the db. We also had trivia questions throughout the site, , , Head-to-Head tournaments, and The Year of the Horse Anniversary Main Game Event Tournament started! Congrats to the following players, who participated in [ heyred72's Trivia for GoldToken's 15th Birthday ]: alexlee, jklh, monkeytyper, MsLady, inpassant, chessbro, RabidWolff of the Wolf Pack, LyndiLoo, BrnIdGirl, Jacob1987, STUSTU, nylady41, BettyAnn, WONRHAF, TallPaul, dawn1968, nightingale, HeidiBug, LittleTree, Chimera, smiler5, Giggles, HenryJaimes, Rand al*Thor, furryfeet, (((INTENSITY))), Meeshamouse, Pooka, JGY, Judy, denise, autumnrain, Silkwood, pepperbeach, Lorraine of the Renegades, whoknows, squiggy2, PattyMac, Whimjest, blackangus, and ellieoop!
Over the course of the next year, the player who collects the most "Year of the Horse" tokens wins a 1 year Platinum membership. The contest will run until October 4, 2015. At that time players who want to enter the contest will report their tokens to GoldToken Support. Stay tuned for more information!
Inverticade & Small Inverticade Inverticade and Small Inverticade are variants of Barricade and Small Barricade, which play similarly to the base game, but the board is inverted, and the goal is to deliver all the pieces to the home location. Scat & Officer's Scat Skat is a trick-taking card game for three players somewhat similar to Whist and Spades, but much more complex. It is the most popular card game in Germany. Officer's Scat is a 2-player variant and is a much simpler game than the main Skat game - there is no bidding, and no special scoring rules. Dice Paper Football, Dice Paper Basketball, Dice Paper Hockey These are similar to the main games, but the dice add a random element to the mix. We can't wait for these games to go live on this site.

Be sure to stop by the discussion board, hosted by smiler5! She provides a brief news story and posts a hilarious headline for it. Your task? Come up with something even better! Fall is certainly settling in around the country. Time to start gearing up for the holiday season. As the leaves change color and school is back in session the time for bonfires and cuddling up by the fire has come. Last month I asked everyone to send me invites for Barricade. Callie, csain1 & blackangus accepted the challenge and sent invites. We are playing some fun games. This month I would love invites for either Tourne-case or Acey-Deucey. Who Made This Mess? In honor of the site's anniversary we thought we would bring you some history. An avid programmer from the age of 10, Chad spent much of his youth in front of the family computer, a trusty TI-99/4A, putting together games using TI's BASIC and Extended BASIC modules. He likes to brag about how he designed and programmed a first-person walk-through maze a few years before Wolfenstein 3D hit the streets. (We always have to remind him that his maze program was almost too slow to be played.) Chad dragged Taylor into his wild plans for new computer games, and together the two brothers spent countless hours designing games that were far beyond the processing power of the little TI that couldn't. Their effort culminated in the design of a short game in which the main character is a stick figure with a bowling ball for a head. (They still insist that, someday, they're actually going to create that game.) Alas, seasons come and go, and Chad soon found himself working as a network analyst for a worldwide food conglomerate, and Taylor was still finishing school. Both were very busy. However, when night fell, they would descend into the bat-cave to conspire once more of ever more grandiose schemes for computer games. A few years before the turn of the century, Chad decided he wanted to put together some games that could be played over the Internet. So he and Taylor dreamed up an elaborate game site where many people could come to play in a real-time environment with each person's actions affecting every other person in a game of conquest across space. This is not that site. As has usually been the case with their games, their ideas were bigger than their abilities. So they scaled back, and turned to the basics: classic board games whose appeal has endured the test of time. The result of their labor is before you. Alas, seasons come and seasons go, and Taylor decided to move on to bigger and better things. Although his influence will always be felt here, he is no longer a driving force behind the website. Never one to do things completely alone (it's cold and dark in the bat cave, you know?), Chad then enlisted the help of Bouncer to help him run the site. Alas, seasons continue to come and go, and Chad and Bouncer decided to move on to bigger and better things as well. The site is now in the capable hands of Badger! Enjoy it! *If there is a site tip or helpful tool that you would like to know more about, please send a pm to GoldToken's Newshound!

October's game of the month is Reversi! Join us in a fun Double Elimination Tournament by signing up today for The Oct. 2014 - Game of the Month - Reversi Tournament! My strategy for reversi by rabbitoid I usually apply the following rules as guidelines. I'm far from being an expert, so follow them at your own risk. There are a lot of better guides on the internet for reversi. Search "reversi strategy". Most strategy sites have some version of my chosen rules, not necessarily in the same order. 1.As far as I'm concerned, the most important point is to avoid having clump edge stones. I explain the concept: in reversi opening we have a central clump of stones, yours and the other guy's. The idea is to have as few stones as possible on the outer edge of the clump. Of course, each move forces you to put at least one stone on the edge, but try not to flip stones along the edge. 2.You must try to have your stones connected as one area. As a consequence, the opposite rule: a move that splits your opponent's area is good. 3.Try to have AS FEW STONES AS POSSIBLE, until quite late in the game. (Of course, do not go to the extreme of zero stones ). Most sites state this as rule number 1. I apply it too, but give it a lower priority. 4.Avoid putting stones on the edge of the board, as late as possible. 5.As a general rule the corner positions: a1, a8, h1, h8 are good for you to capture, but beware: not at any price. 6.As a consequence the squares next to the corners are to be avoided until late in the game: a2, b1 and so on. particularly bad are b2, b7, g2, g7. There are exceptions, however. We hope you enjoy it! Special to *rabbitoid* for writing this month's Game of the Month Nugget. You too, can write a knock-out Nugget and reap the rewards! If your Nugget is chosen as the winner for GoldToken's Game of the Month in GoldToken's Monthly Newsletter, you will win:

I know I spend far to much time here at GoldToken I am one of the many addicted to this great site. I cannot remember exactly how I came to start playing here but I do remember that around 2000 I started taking an interest in our computer and my sister Lis gave me a book with lots of different internet sites to visit. One was for an on-line game site. Having enjoyed playing "real" backgammon I thought I would give it a go on-line. Well I was soon hooked and playing at quite a few different sites. I must have stumbled across GT in 2003 and 11 years later I am still here and hardly play any where else.( Just one site that offers Canasta "hint "hint") What I enjoy most about GT is the clubs here.I have never found anywhere else that offers this' I have owned a club since 2007 and ran an Olympic team for several years, being on the winning team twice and coming second another time. I have met several great friends here .wgh , Budgie ,smiler5 and whitewolf being four that spring to mind. All of whom I have met in person which is always fun. As my friends know, I love to take part but I also love to win more . sallyp
New Game Design October's contest is the best New Game Design, submitted by PM to GoldToken Support, throughout the month. You can include your own graphics, opt to use graphics already available on GoldToken, or if chosen as the winning entry, possibly have your graphics designed by our professional graphic artists. All entries will be reviewed for playability and judged by GoldToken's Graphic Arts team. There are a number steps involved in creating a new board game. A new game design can be a variation of a current game or entirely new, but it must be original, never submitted before, and not a game found anywhere else. Start with variations of games that you love, that you loved as a child etc. Work out what makes these games fun, what’s wrong with these games, what could be better. Look at all different kinds of games from many different genres. This is the funnest part of game design. We hope you enjoy planning your entry! The winning game will be announced in November's newsletter. Winner will receive two extra months on their current membership, or, if Guest, a two month Silver membership, and see their new game added to GoldToken's venue of games (as long as it is feasible to code), sometime during this next year. We have a winner for Club Owner Of The Year!to Scoopdedew of The Scoop's Castle Club! She will receive a 2-month extension to her current membership.
