That's a great question! I designed it that way to create immediate pressure at the game's start. Without that pressure, the first turn is essentially random placement of cards and can really determine the outcome of the game on the first attack phase if a player is unlucky.

With one heart down in one location, players automatically start thinking both defensively and offensively and have the ability to strategize right out the gate.
